Treating Fever
|
|
We are told so quickly to treat a fever in our children-but a fever is one of the body's methods for killing the nasties that are making it sick. By raising its temperature you reduce the ability of the virus or bacteria to function.
So take away the fever and you take away a mechanism of the body to cope.
So what are your thoughts on treating fever?

Generally I tend to visit a doctor whenever myself or anyone in the family had fever but as far as it is concerned to my grandma, she used to wrap around a thick blanket and sleep in the hot sun and by evening she would seem to look fit and recovered, not sure if it really worked.

You are right, according to the Mayo clinic, If you have only a low-grade fever, it's not advisable to try to lower your temperature. Doing so may only prolong the illness or mask your symptoms and make it harder to determine the cause.
Some experts believe that aggressively treating a fever actually interferes with your body's immune response. That's because the viruses that cause colds and other respiratory infections thrive at cool temperatures. By producing a low-grade fever, your body may actually be helping eliminate a virus.

wow, we rarely visit the doctor. I only try to lower the fever if it's very high AND my children seem out of sorts or lethargic. Then, I try natural methods first. Lukewarm (NEVER cold) baths, wiping them down with a cool wash cloth, dressing them down to a light shirt and undies or diaper. I rarely give tylenol to reduce fever.

For my son,I normally use a cold towel on his forehead, I also give him sponge bath. The last time I gave him some panadol for the fever. I am not sure which worked but he was up and playing again within an hour, even though he was still having the fever. I think the playing burnt out the rest of the fever.
