Safe To Exercise

I was wondering how kids are supposed to get an hour's worth of outdoors exercises when it is too dangerous to have the kids go out by themselves in the city.

I know that the playground near my home is filled with older teens and they are too rough and sometimes dangerous to let the younger kids be around. Even the kiddy section isn't good for the younger kids, because they don't want to be seen with really young kids and their moms.

So I did some research and I found articles that had ideas.

They suggest that the parents do some of these exercise activities with their kids. If a Mom or a Dad has some free time, get a group of kids together for a ball game of some sort. Also teach your kids to ride a bicycle so the whole family can go riding together. That way the kids can also invite their friends to go with you all on a trip to a safe place to ride.

They suggest that if you have a backyard, use it to create a small fitness course there, complete with jump rope, jumping jack, and pushup stations.

Some gyms have child care inside it and the kids get to do some exercises with a professional. It's a good way to start them in getting used to taking gym classes.

And that slides right into getting the kids in classes. There are many different things to study: dance, gymnastics, fencing, and karate are just a few. Try some different classes: rock climbing, and classes that follow some of your own cultural traditions.

And at the very least, get your kids the physical interactive computer games that are around. The kids might not get fresh air, but they can still exercise safely that way.

what about DDR? or wiifit?
some places are just too dangerous to get fresh air.. like inner city with an elevated high pollution count.
A DDR pad, Wiifit or even a wii like tennis, gives exercise without the need for problems in a method that kids can accept.
Outdoor problems, lack ofinterest was one reason why theer are now many interactive games that focus on exercise in some cases without teh kids knowing about it.

You could also bring them for a walk on the sidewalk or, if your city has it, on a walking trail. Walking is a great form of exercise.

I agree walking is a good idea. If you have a mall many times they open early to let walkers in to walk.

Great post skatss. I agree- I read also the way to get your kids to exercise is to get out there with them.

Family exercises- swimming, hiking, a picnic and a hike. We exercise together every day. If we can't get outside due to weather- we do the free exercise on tv. In the winter we go tubing and sledding (with snow) that is great exercise.

There are so many things that you can do, when it's not safe to play outside and when the weather is bad. You can dance, you can do little aerobics routines. You can play animals and have the kids running around the house like particular animals-this is a favourite of ours.

Or just have them run up and down the stairs. Or in circles around the living room or up and down the hallway. There are plenty of ways to work around restrictions, and allowing fear to keep you inside is no way to raise kids.

I bring my kids to the local park once a week. They could get all the runnings and sweatings there.

So long as the child is moving around and playing they are getting exercise. My little one loves my Gym ball, she is always rolling around the living room on it.
