Right Age for Kids to see a Dentist

My son just turned 2 and my pediatrician has told me we need to take him to the dentist. Actually, she also told me this at his 12 month and 18 month appointment.
When did you start taking your kids to the dentist?

I took my son to the dentist once he got in all of his teeth. Around the age of 2, if I remember correctly. I found a really great children's dentist and my son was fine.

There are tons of children's dentists and clinics that seem to be popping up all over the place. I think you could go in for a quickie exam when their 2, but it seems they will sit still longer when their a little older. :)

When I spoke to the local clinic, they told me to bring her in when she reached three. The eye doctor said five.

So perhaps it's just a local thing, being a small town, but we are not told as early.

That's weird. I think different doctors will tell you different things. Dentists work for profit, so they'll try to convince you to bring your kids in as young as possible. My pediatrician checks my daughter's teeth herself, and prescribes fluoride, etc. No need for a dentist until permanent teeth come in, as long as I'm taking care of her teeth myself.

I think I was around 7 years old when I first saw the dentist. I think that's a good age to first go, though it is scary.

You should clean your kids teeth daily however, and be on the lookout for any cavities or tooth complications if you choose to have them go to the dentist 5-7 years into their life. ;)

I asked our dentist and he said 2. We decided we'd take him when he started getting a good bit of teeth. Just so he gets use to it. We aren't even putting him on our insurace until 3 or 4. It cost less to just pay the $50 office visit twice a year.

I started taking my boys to the dentist every 6 months as soon as they got their first tooth. My 20 yr old has never had a cavity. My 17 yr old has had two. I used to save $6 a week for 6 months and took them to a pediatric dentist.
