New allergy diagnosed by pediatrician

My son was just diagnosed with an allergy to grass pollen by his pediatrician. I always thought a person had to be seen by an allergist and be tested but his pediatrician says there is no need unless he develops unknown allergies. Should I have him tested anyways or just wait and see?

I don't think it could hurt to have your son tested if you're concerned. But I think his pediatrician is right. Doctors can easily diagnose allergies and if something strange seems to develop the doctor would send the person to a specialist.

If you are concerned, see an allergist, if your insurance covers it. But I have had a doctor confirm my suspicions about an allergy before. Especially things that are common, like milk allergies and grass allergies, I think are easily diagnosed by a pediatrician.

I'd be curious how the pediatrician made the diagnosis without a scratch test or something similar. Was it a skin reaction that he had? If it were skin then I would agree but to narrow it down to one pollen type without the scratch test doesn't make sense to me. I think an allergist would be best so a wider range of allergens could be tested.

Chris, the reason a doctor would be able to specify grass pollen is because pollens have certain seasons where they are active. Right now until the beginning of June is grass pollen. In another couple of weeks, tree pollen will be the most likely culprit.

For your comfort level, if you feel the need to I think you should. Also it depends on how long you have been with her, do you trust her opinion that much. I would get a secong opinion just to be sure.

You know, the allergy testing can be very uncomfortable. I am not sure that it is something I would want to put a child through unless I have to do so. If the seasons fit, and if the allergy isn't killing him I would just accept it and watch him from here on in.
