jaundice

They told me my son was jaundice at birth. Scared me 1/2 to death. I didn't stop crying and blaming myself for days. When we saw our pediatrician he said he was fine. It seems like this disease is being seriously misdiagnosed. I know i'm not the only one that was scared over nothing!

Jaundice isn't a disease, but can be a sign of disease.
Jaundice is fairly common in babies. So much so that hospitals are all set with lights to place the babies under to help resolve it. My twin sons both developed jaundice within hour of birth, and grew up to be healthy adults.
Did your doctor explain what was causing the jaundice?

Jaundice, if taken care of right away, isn't much to worry about. Lots of babies are jaundice and have no problems later on.

my daughter was born with it as well. Its common and really very normal.
All it is is elevated billiruben levels.
a little sunshine a good diet and its gone. with our daughter it dissipate din 48 hours after we started taking her outside and giving her a bit of cranberry juice.... yup jucie after she was born.,. we had an awsome ped.
What you ahve to worry about is if the blood work when theya re forst born come back askew...
otherwise every baby is good as gold... or yellow.....

Very interesting to read about. So it only takes some sunshine and good vitamins to clear it up I guess when its a mild case?

Not vitamins-the baby needs to be pooping. Bili is expelled in stool, so the baby has to be having bowel movements.
It isn't a disease, and up to half of babies suffer from it. It's not dangerous till it hits a bili level of 20, at which point it could cause brain damage.
My daughter had a level of 13.8 at 36 hours old. I was 'recommended' that I give her formula because I was told by the doc that nursing, especially when you milk has yet to come in, is ineffective, and that they would give me just 24 hours to start her levels coming down, or else would be taking her back to the hospital the next day. The levels rise for 3-5 days you see, so they expected her to get much higher.
She was put on a 90 minute feeding schedule, or more frequently if she wanted. We spent lots of time in the sun, and the next day we went back and she was down to 13.5-crisis averted. Docs know that new parents will panic, and yet they seem to use that to make you comply with their wishes-in this case it seems they were pushing formula.
The vitamin K shot, given at birth, drastically increases the chances of high bili levels.

Could it be, then, that the vitamin K shots they give infants are actually dangerous since they don't know how the baby will react?

Well my son didn't actually have it. The hospital said he did and almost didn't let us leave when we planned. We left 25 hours after he was born. Then the next afternoon we went to see my pediatrician and he said all his levels were normal.

I also heard some jaundice is also developed due to smoke inhalation. If a mother smokes the risk is higher? Does anyone know if there is any truth behind that?
* I DID NOT smoke or drink while i was pregnant. Just wanted to share that.
