Deceptively Delicious, or Definitely Deadly?

Jessica Seinfeld has a popular book that tells people how to hide vegetables inside dishes that kids will eat. Its done to help kids eat servings of vegetables even though they don't see any on their plate.

There is now a food company who is thinking of making that a whole new line of foods. They will be advertised as child friendly meals of something like Mac and cheese that will have at least once serving of vegetables hidden in it that the kids can't see or taste.

The theory is that kids hate vegetables and refuse to eat them, so if you hide the vegetables in their Mac and cheese or chicken Nuggets the kids will be eating healthy without any fuss.

Do you think that it is a good idea to hide all the vegetables in kid's foods so that they will eat it?

I think that if you cater to the kids like that, if you give up and simply let them just eat the Mac and cheese without putting recognizable vegetables on their plates for them to learn to eat and like, then I think that you are not teaching your kids what they need to learn. People need to eat vegetables all their lives in order to be healthy.

I think that if the parents totally give up getting their kids to eat veggies, then those kids will grow up to be adults who will never learn to like and eat vegetables. By permitting them not eat any veggies, kids will never learn how to eat in order to live a healthy life.

Am I wrong in thinking that it is more important to teach your kids that vegetables are important for your health than it is to just feed them what they like to eat? Is it more important to have a quiet meal than it is to have meals that teach your kids good habits for their lifetime?

What do you think?

I think you should teach your kids about healthy eating but sometimes all you can do is hide them if they really wont eat them.

Hiding the vegetables does work. But I agree it is important to teach kids the importance of healthy eating. Some kids just dont like the look of vegetables, so hiding them would become a good option for some parents.

I think that there has to be a balance. For little ones, the stubbornness often wins out and so they go without. With older children yes, you can press the issue more but I wouldn't worry about it till a little older when they can be reasoned with. Till then, get them in however you can.

I agree that it is important to teach your kids the importance of veggies and fruits but if they are not willing to eat them then I think it is equally important to do what it takes to get them that nutrition and maybe save the teaching for when they are a little older then you can let them know they've been eating this all along.

I think that it would be better if you could get kids to eat vegetables without hiding them. Once they find out what you are doing it defeats the purpose.

I don't know what purpose this serves in the long run. I mean, I understand that it's important for children to eat healthy meals. But while it may be easier to accomplish this by hiding it, it creates problems in the long run. As the child gets older and goes to school, you won't be there to do this for them. At some point you have to teach them to eat healthy for themselves.

When I was a kid I never ate vegetables, but now I cannot get enough of them. I think our tastes change as we get older.

Well, if you have exhausted all the methods to get your kids to eat veggies, this is a good way out of it.I fully supported such an act. I think when they grow up and mix around, they will get the idea that they need to take veggies. By that time, they don't have to go for such a food.
