Chicken pox

We have chosen not to have the vaccine for chicken pox, but my kids haven't had the wild virus yet. Well, a friend of a friend's kids have chicken pox right now and she's inviting people over who want their kids to have it. It's a good time for my kids to get it - the youngest is going to be 2 soon and the oldest is 11. I don't want them to go into the teenage years not having had it or the vaccine. I'm planning on taking a couple of them over tomorrow for a play date.

Would you knowingly expose your child?

Do you mean would I knowingly expose my child to chicken pox if he hadn't received the shot? Probably not.
I did choose to have my child receive the vaccine. Still I would not take them over to some kids house who currently had chicken pox.

I don't see anything wrong with it. It is best to have it and get it over with while they are young. I didn't get chicken pox till I was seven-teen, and it was horrible. I think its a good idea.

Why didn't you choose to get the vaccine? I had chicken pox when I was in 3rd or 4th grade and it was absolutely terrible. A long week of scratching and I still have a couple scars.
To answer your question, no I would not knowingly expose them.

The CDCP says about 15 percent to 20 percent of people who have received one dose of chicken-pox vaccine do still get chicken pox if they are exposed, but their disease is usually mild.

However, children who received two doses of the chicken-pox vaccine were three times less likely to contract the disease than individuals who have had only one dose.

Chicken Pox is pretty harsh, I don't think I would knowingly expose my child to it.

We selectively vaccinate. I believe having the actual disease in some cases is better than having the vaccine. Chicken pox is one of those. I had the pox when I was 6. I still remember it. Better to have it when you are young then to contract it at 25 not knowing your vaccine has worn off.

I do not believe that chicken pox is anything more than a hyped up disease, made to sound more dangerous because there is a vaccine to sell. I come from a country where there is no vaccine, and pox parties are still hugely common. Measles parties too.

No, it's not a third world country. However, it would seem that American outlook on a disease is led by whether there is a vaccine against it or not. If there is, then it's a killer disease. However if you look at the CDC pages on the pox from twenty years ago they tell of a mild disease that is of little consequence.

When they have a shot to sell, suddenly it becomes a killer. Yes, I would expose them.

I guess it makes sense for your situation and choices. For me, I had a horrible case of chicken pox that lasted way too long, has left me with nasty scars all over my body, and literally covered me from my feet to the top of my head. Because I know how badly my body reacted to it, I will likely vaccinate my kids and try not to expose them to it regardless.

Otherwise, I'm not sure I'd be able to consciously think "oh, let's go get our kids sick this weekend...are you ready?" It's smart planning, but I don't know if I could actually do it, lol.

It may be good to get it over with, but I don't know if directly exposing your kids to all these viruses is such a good thing.

I've been reading your posts...do you want your kids to be sick or something? This is the second one where you're trying to expose your kids to a virus / intentionally get them sick.

Any sickness is not good for a child's health...

How old are your kids?

I wouldn't expose my child knowingly.

The best estimation by drs is that I have type 1 diabetes because of chicken pox and my sister in law's brother had a kid who got an enlarged heart because of it that killed her.

My husband hadn't had it either so when my son was 1 he and my husband got the vaccine for chicken pox. I need to talk to his doctor about boosters now that that seems to be the thing. We were told it would last for life but that was almost 11 years ago.

I wouldn't fool around with this disease, you never know what complications can arise.

What do they suggest now? I know that is how my mother did it with us. I haven't come to that point with my son yet. You should talk to your pediatricain.

Every parent needs to decide for themselves, do the research, ask the experts, talk to other people and make the best choice for their child.
I just know for us, our child will never be willingly on purpose exposed to a disease.
