Cavities in baby teeth?
|
|
I noticed my son has some grey spots on two of his top teeth this morning. I thought it was junk and tried to scrap it with my nail, but it's in the tooth. :( I googled a bit and it looks pretty typical for juvenile dental caries or bottle rot. He's never had a bottle! But he does nurse to sleep and frequently sleeps on the breast. We don't have dental insurance for the kids until August, but I could take him to the low-income clinic. I just worry about quality of care there. Anyone have advice? Can I just wait until August?

I know the low cost clinic here is just as good as many of the dentists I've seen people go to. In fact its better than some of the poor dentists I went to when I had good dental insurance. So long as you have an idea of what the problem is you can advocate for your child and not be told he's fine if he has rotting teeth.

True. I have been to low cost clinics and recieved just as good if not better care than my regular hospital.

Well how old is he? I had a small cavity when I was a toddler and nothing was done about it. The dentist said to keep it clean and unless it was giving me pain, not to worry about it, because it'd be falling out anyway.
If he still has quite a while before teeth start falling out, though, then they may want to fill the cavities....or at least give a good cleaning. I'd say go to the low-income cleaning for now and then you can switch over to your regular dentist after insurance.

I would say get him to the dentist as soon as possible. At least an initial diagnosis would be good. Maybe it won't be as bad as you think and you can wait to take care of it until your dental insurance kicks in.

He's only 13 months old, just had those teeth since january. So it is a while before he will lose them, like 5 years...
I've been doing more research and I'm thinking we'll do an initial visit, and then treat with xylitol until we get insurance.
