Autism

Do you believe autism is a form of natural variation or a disease that needs to be cured?

I ask because I have more than one friend with children with autism spectrum disorders. Some feel firmly we can cure autism, others are just as steadfast in their belief that it is neurodiversity and not to be cured.

I read a piece online that argued autism is just a different kind of person.

"A noted cognitive nueroscientist and one of his patients (who has autism) team up to advance the hypothesis that autism isn't a disorder, but simply a different kind of person. They say that arguing that autism makes you "good at numbers" but "bad at socializing" is like taking a dog and saying that it's a special kind of cat that's "bad at climbing" but "good at fetching slippers." Autism makes you a different kind of person, most usefully compared to other people with autism."

My close friends son is autistic and so is her husband. I dont think it can be fully cured as there will always be certain things the person struggles with but it can be managed.

There are allot of parents that fear there is a link between vaccination shots and autism.

I find this interesting because they have found trace amounts of thimerosal; a controversial mercury-based preservative. And it just so happens that our autism rates are the highest they have ever been in our country.

I don't know if this is true but as a parent of an 11 month old I think should definitely research this more.

Here is a great article that may open up your eyes to this rather controversial subject: http://www.naturalnews.com/011764.html

I think that autism is just something you are naturally born with, it's definitely not anything you would want your child or a loved one to have because it does change their personality and the way they do things.

My best friends brother is autistic. To be honest I never knew it until one day I was over their house, Her brother was in the other room by himself. We heard him choking and we ran into the room. We started flipping out screaming for her mother who was sleeping. She came running down the stairs. We called 911, and her brother thankfully spit up what he was choking on. It was a piece of ice. After that he continued to act very strange and confused for a while. The paramedics came and he would not speak.

After they left my friend told me that he was autistic. She said that's why he acts so shy all the time. Which I always knew he was shy, but I didn't think it was a problem I just thought that's how he was. He has a twin that is the total opposite of shy which is weird. They are identical twins?!

I do not believe that is it a natural thing, nor do I believe that it is something that just makes you a different type of person. Yes, I believe that it is a condition that needs treatment and could ultimately be cured-OR prevented in the first place if dealt with right.

The increase in cases is huge. There was no autism before-what, 1943. So something in our environment and lives is doing this to our children.

I disagree that there was no autism before 1943. I think they just weren't aware of the problems as well as today. Many people with autism were diagnosed with mental retardation or mental illnesses instead of autism. I do agree that there are environmental factors that we haven't even begun to realize. Given the huge amounts of chemicals in the air, water and even the food we eat, it would be unrealistic not to expect some problems to arise.
