Subject: | World's first face transplant | |
This is unbelievable. In France, Pascal Coler received the first ever successful face implant. Coler suffers from neurofibromatosis, a condition that causes tumors to grow on a victim's face, disfiguring it beyond recognition, the same condition that the infamous "elephant man" suffered from. Laurent Lantieri, the head of plastic surgery at Henri-Mondor Hospital, says that "almost all" of Coler's face was replaced with the donors features: new lips, cheeks, nose and mouth. In my mind this raises all sorts of questions. I wonder how the donating family would feel if they ran into Coler on the street? And that’s just one scenario. I think it is great that he will now be able to live a normal life. What do you think? Heres a link to the story including pics. Check it out. http://abcnews.go.com/Health/story?id=4511813&page=1 |

It is amazing how far surgical procedures have come. The difference between before and after is un-believable. |

Wow, that is truly amazing. They said he didn't look exactly like the donor because his face structure and bones were different giving himself a unique look. |

This reminded me of the film Face Off. I thought this only possible in movies, now the medical world made it possible already. I hope this medical advancement won't be used by rich criminals to have their faces changed. Nonetheless, I'm happy for this guy because the doctors have given him a new life. |

Wow, that is just amazing. I bet this would be really beneficial in cases of accidents where people's faces are extremely disfigured as a result. Bone structure may give the features a slightly different appearance at the end, but I wonder just how similar the two faces look anyway. |
