Subject: | Using Onions to break a fever | |
I have heard of some bizarre home remedies, but this one really blows my mind. An older relative of mine has talked many times of how they used onions to break a fever. A few years back my nephew was running a high fever of 103 and it would not go down even with taking Tylenol, Motrin, and giving him cool baths. So this older relative convinced his mother to put slices of onion in his socks and let him sleep with them like that. Amazingly the next morning the fever was gone. Now whether or not it had anything to do with the onions,I will never know. |

I have never heard anything like that. I can't imagine that an onion by your feet can help you, but I am happy that it helped your nephew. |

What an interesting, and stinky, fever remedy. I have never heard of anything like this - where did your relative hear of this? |

This is a new one for me too! I have made an onion tea to help my baby go to sleep. You boil some sliced videlias for about an hour, pour the water into a container and add sugar. After it cools to room temperature, give to baby in bottle. This is a home remedy that really works but after nights my baby refused to take it, lol. |

Actually is has validity for some reasons. Onions contain afew ingredients that when absorbed therough teh skin can help increase circulation. IIt has s small amount of aspirin in it poure form as well. But more than that, i covering teh feet help to keep teh body warm, ergo onions are also a counter irritant, all combioned can act diffeerntly on bringing down a fever. I ahve used onions in a plaster fo rdealing with adult croup. It works very well to break up congestion. j |

To me it's actually the opposite. My cousin used to cut an onion into three and put the middle piece in between her armpit and her temperature would go up.. that's how she usually get away with staying home and not going to school. I'm so serious LOL. |

Apparently this was a home remedy for fever that my husbands family had used on many different occasions. According to the older relative, the onion somehow draws the fever out of the body??? I don't quite get it myself. To me an onion wouldn't have the strength to lower or raise a temperature but just give you smelly feet or smelly armpits! All I know is the child's fever broke, I just don't know exactly why. |
