Subject: | Ridding sugar from your diet | |
I tried, about 6 months ago, to go sugar-free after reading Little Sugar Addicts. I was unsuccessful, mostly by lack of my own will power. Now that my son has developed cavities I want to try it again. Has anyone ever done it (and I don't mean using sugar substitutes, I mean ridding your diet of processed sugars). |

I did at one point when my mother was on a strange diet. We had no sugar or gluten for three months. It was rough, and finding things without sugar is hard. Remember that carbohydrates reduce to sugars as do fruits and other natural sweeteners, so just getting rid of sugar from your diet will not stop cavities. |

I have never tried to complete eliminate sugar from my diet, but I have reduced my intake significantly. As a result, I was unable to lose some weight and also to maintain my current weight. |

If you are simply trying to get rid of eating food that have simple sugars in or added to them, it isn't that hard. With diabetics in my house as I grew up, we pretty much got rid of all processed foods with sugar added. For the members of the family who couldn't get off sweetener in coffee, we had sugar substitutes. But most of us got used to plain unsweetened drinks and foods. If you or your child has a sweet tooth, try making sure you all eat four to five pieces of fruit a day. That will tame a sweet tooth and it will start to get you to lose the desire to eat things that are very sweet. If you do it slowly, you can get rid of sugary foods and not miss them. |

Wow! Good luck to you, Kara! Let us know how it goes. I have never tried to do this and hopefully I will never need to. I have a terrible sweet tooth and it would be so hard for me to get rid of sugar from my diet. |

I have tried to eliminate things with sugar additives in them, which seems to be in most our processed foods now days. Even though you may get rid of sugar additives, the possibility of eliminating sugar is about nil, as starch does turn to sugar and yep, fruits have a natural sugar in them. |

I'm always trying to go on diets like that, it never works for me either. There are just so many foods I love it's so hard to stop eating them. Especially when I see someone eating something really good, I can't help but want it too. Everybody gets cavities though, it's not a biggie. I have 8 right now that I have to get filled in soon, 2 at a time.Plus 5 other teeth that need to get pulled out! Scared :( |

It's hard to eliminate sugar completely out of your diet. I have cut down drastically on what I put sugar in, etc. |

being diabetic it was a top priority. Table sugar has slowly come back into my diet. But really sugar is only poart of teh problem with caries. One way to reduce cavitries is if you imbine sugary stuff brush afterwards. Now I choose foods with splenda. A good toothpaste and flouride rinse afterwards will helpto keep cavities at bay and still allow some sugar in teh house. |

While I haven't tried to completely eliminate sugar--I do not purposely add it to anything I eat and I do not purchase sugared cereals in general. I also try to avoid anything that has high fructose corn syrup added to it. Good luck with your attempt to eliminate it I hope it works. |
