Subject: | Hypnosis (Quit Smoking) | |
My mom has tried several different methods for quitting smoking. Her best results yet (which last a year and of half of no smoking) were after she went for a sound-oriented treatment. I don't know exactly what they did or how it all supposedly worked, but it had something to do with using various sound frequencies....sounded fishy to me at the time, but I knew it might have a placebo effect for her, if nothing else, and she stuck with it after having her two sessions with them. Now, she's back at it again and has been smoking for 6 months. I'm all for alternatives to medicines and have successfully used some of them myself, but she really seems to be grasping at straws because she's quit and started up again so many times....I just don't think she has the confidence to do it on her own any more and keeps reaching for new things to try. Her latest interest is hypnosis. It could once again have a placebo effect maybe, but has anyone here ever tried it before? Are there other "methods" that might work better for her? Or even a prescription that would *really* help her quit....for good this time? |

I think anything that can help cure the addiction is well worth the effort, conventional or otherwise. I myself was a 3 pack a day smoker. I quit 7 years ago and it was the hardest thing I've ever done. I did it by chewing and getting hooked on Nicorette Gum. The gum cost more than cigarettes at the time but I think it was money well spent. I think quitting is all about mindset and determination. If your not ready to quit, you won't but at least your mom's trying. |

Nicotine gum could be of great help but its not a total answer for quitting smoking. I'm not totally convinced about hypnosis because its like forcing your mind to be controlled by others. I guess encouragement and support will help a lot. |

I think that those of us that are ready to quit still fail at actually succeeding. I am ready to quit and have tried a few times, once with the gum. I am still a continual Yo-Yo, who stops for a while and than am on again. |

The main thing to remember is that you're not breaking one addiction - you're breaking two. The physical addiction to nicotine is real and it's nasty - but breakable. The psychological addiction to smoking is infinitely worse to break. When you think about breaking both at once, it's daunting, but if you prepare yourself against both at once, your chances of quitting are greatly improved |
