Subject: Honey & Allergies

Carybyrd brought this up in the Bee Venom Therapy thread and I thought I'd bring it up here because I have heard this as well. Local honey is supposed to help reduce allergies especially specific allergies to pollens. My wife is allergic to pollen from the maple tree blossoms among other things. I think the first recommendation in that vein was from our family physician of all people. We were advised to talk to the local apiary and try to get honey that the bees made from the time the trees were in blossom. We have experimented with this a little but have not had solid success that we can report. We are not sure if the honey is helping or she is exposed to less of the pollen. It does bother her less though than it did.

That is a neat little experiment though that you are doing. If you do find it to work then what a relief that has to be for her.

I started reading up on the whole idea of it more since I stumbled across the other thread. It is actually quite an interesting subject and looks to be getting more and more popular too.

It is supposed to help quite a bit. Has she been using the honey on a regular basis? I have a friend who uses it every morning on his oatmeal and he swears by it. I hope she does feel better though, allergies are horrible!

I eat local honey and it seems to lessen the severity of my allergies. I still take Zyrtec too, but my allergies aren't as bad as they were before I started eating the local honey several months ago. Tell her to keep it up. It takes a while for her body to stop reacting to the pollens.

I would like to hear more about this myself. I am not sure where I would look local for my bee farmers in this area though. Suggestions for the not so bright on the subject??

Ask around work and your neighbors they will know where the local apiary is even if they are not listed in the phone book. Failing that go out and catch a couple bees in a jar in the same location. Later let one bee go and follow it for awhile. Note on a map the direction it was going. Go some where well off that course and let the other one go. Follow it for awhile and note the direction it goes. The two lines on your map if you extend them will cross. That will roughly be where the hive is. Quite probably the location of the bee keeper.

I have a friend whose family all takes a teaspoon of natural honey, everyday. They swear by it. They said they don't have to take as much medication for their allergies, as they did before the honey.

I guess I'll have to find some local honey because my allergies are killing me. I don't think I've had this hard of a time for many years but it is really hard this year to breathe without congestion.
