Subject: Herbal Treatments for IBS

I suffer from IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and I've been looking for better ways to treat my symptoms. The medicines I've taken in the past were very strong and I feel like there must be a better way.

My biggest problem is stress. I eat pretty healthy and exercise regularly but still have stomach and stress issues.

Does anyone have suggestions for herbal remedies that may help?

If stress is the issue then something like valarian root, or stress meds based on this herb may help. Also such things as massage to help cope with stress.

Probiotics have also been shown to help, in a small number of cases of IBS but the biggest thing is to avoid the foods that are your triggers.

I don't know about herbals, but I recommend probiotics, fish oils, chiropractic adjustment, acupuncture and doing an elimination diet to find out food intolerances.

Thanks drabble and mom2many. Great advice. Massage does help but my husband and I are going thru some $$ issues (he lost his job recently). I'm curious about the acupuncture. It sounds so cool but I've never tried it and would have no idea where to find a good acupuncturist. I need to add more fish oil. I'll try out the valarian root. Thanks again!

I find stress is my biggest trigger for digestive issues. No matter what I eat if I am stressed I begin the gurgling stomach within ten minutes. I've never tried acupuncture but have heard great things from people who do. You may also be able to find a massage therapy technical college to get cheaper massages. All massage therapists have to pass exams and need willing people to let them practice on.

Thanks Zebra, that's a really good suggestion. I'll look into it.

I also wanted to add I've started taking fish oil pills. I keep getting that gurgling feeling in my stomach (like my normal IBS symptoms). I also have indigestion. Is this normal? Will it go away after a while? Plus, I smell fish (it's stuck in my nose) and it's starting to gross me out.
