Subject: | Ear Candles | |
Does anyone else use ear candles? If so how often do you do your ears?Do you get them done professionally by a doctor or do it yourself/have someone else help you? I've been ear candling for about 3 or 4 years now.I heard about it from a friend of mine.He went to a doctor and would spend around 80.00 per ear to have them done. The visit would include 4 candles (2 for each ear) and about a 2 hour visit total. My husband does mine for me. I do my ears about every 2-3 months.Sometimes I wait longer.I only use 1 candle for each ear since the first time when they reccomend 2 per ear.We have a nice little new age/hippie type store near by. I buy my candles there since they are hand rolled and come in both regular and sinus versions. I've had good experiance with them.I know some people dont believe in using them and they don't work well for everyone. My ears always feel like I have some type of drainage or are dirty. But, when I clean them nothing comes out. Then I got into ear candling and things have been well since then. |

Nice. I have always been curious about how they actually work. Any insight? |

I have heard that a lot of the candles are a hoax and what is claimed to be earwax is really debris from the candle. Ear candling is where you place a hollow candle in one end of your ear then light the other. Users say that the flame creates negative pressure, which draws wax and debris out of the ear canal, seen as a dark residue left behind in the candle. According to studies done in 1996, ear candling does not produce negative pressure and fails to remove ear wax. |

If you have that kind of repeated feelings of discomfort in your ears, then you might be harboring a long term infection, or something else in your sinuses or ear canals. It really might be a good idea to see an Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat specialist. I'd hate to think you have an infection and leaving it alone might damage your delicate hearing. It can also mean that there might be something else taking up space in your head and a doctor should really look at it well. If you simply have extra wax than I'd think that plain peroxide washes would be sufficient to clean them out once or twice a year. You use the candle every two months and still have an ongoing feeling of being stuffed? That doesn't strike me as healthy -- as much as I know. I really do suggest that someone take a good look at you. Better safe than sorry. |

I've had chronic ear infections as a kid until I was a teenager. I do use ear candles every once in awhile but I can't say they are the miracle everyone says they are. They are still pretty expensive ($20/2) so I can see where your friend paid so much willingly to have a trained person administer them. |

what are they for? is it for ear infections, or does it draw out other stuff? I've never tried them (obviously) I swear by chiropractic to keep me and mine healthy. |

Ok, I lost my whole post so here it goes again quick. It's an old native american method to clean ear wax. That's were it orginated.Basically it's the same method as the Hungarian version of blowing smoke in the ear canal. The candles create a vaccum seal in the canal and the pressure creates a suction that sucks up the wax. You can feel it come up.At least I can. Sorry for the graphic description but it looks like hard boiled egg yolks when it's there. So, it's obvious it not other debri. The candles are parafain wax and some type of cloth that is hand rolled together. When it burns it's a pretty clean burn and the candle along with the wax inside burns onto it self melting down to the end. Ever now and then you get a few ashes but they of course are mainly grey and black. I don't get ear infections but sometimes get sinus drainage.I use mine to clean my ears.Q-tips don't work for me. I also do peroxide them as well to clean them. Purple-Really? I get my candles for 3.50 a piece and 4.00 for the sinus ones. Mom2many- I also swear by chiropractors and it's mainly to clean the ears. |

I have only had smoke blown at me for an earache that just would not go away. Otherwise I stick with Qtips. |
