Subject: | Dealing with Depression Without Meds | |
I have never liked taking meds, and avoid them unless for instance pain is unbearable. But unfortunately I suffer from depression from time to time. Most of the time I am ok, but this has been life long and comes back to haunt me from time to time. Is there anything that you find helps pick you up at times like these? |

Exercise can be very effective to help life your mood. Doing something fun for yourself can also give you a mood boost. Take a spa day, spend a day with a good friend, etc. If your depressed for more than a day or two or the feelings come in regular cycles, you really should consult with a professional to rule out clinical depression or bipolar disorder. |

I heard a story of a man who was depressed to the point of not really wanting to live. Decided he would start jogging so that he would induce a heart attack. Didn't get the heart attack but after a few weeks of regular jogging he started to feel a whole lot better. |

Exercise is very important for people who suffer from depression. And sunlight exposure; even just 5-10 minutes a day can make a world of a difference. If you live in a darker (cloudier) area, buy some of those sunlight bulbs for your bathroom. Not as good, but it will help. There is also St. John's Wort, an herbal remedy. You may also have some food triggers, so try keeping a food journal. |

Well if you are depressed, you can try going outside and appreciating life. Take a walk, think, and maybe smell the roses sort-of-say? Doing that kind of stuff usually takes depression out of your life. If you don't like going outside, which some people don't, why not enjoy being on the Internet and engaging in discussion forums with other people, friend? :) |

Exercise is an important factor in depression and so is eating healthy. I myself have taken St. Johns Wart and it as helped. It is a natural non-prescription herbal supplement. |

I also have depression but the medications don't help me much because they tend to increase my anxiety level so I don't take anti-depressants. When I'm having problems I drag myself outside for a walk or to do some gardening if the weather permits. If not, I might go to Walmart or some other large store or mall and walk. Sometimes I just allow myself to have a bad day and be lazy and watch tv but not very often. |

I would say, you need some entertainment. Loosen up by exercising, playing a game with someone, go shopping, watch movie, or dine in a restaurant. Make yourself busy as much as possible to relieve that depression. Everyone experiences depression, we just need some time to relax and unwind. |

My best friend in college decided in high school that her anti-depressant meds made her life worse not better and stopped taking them and used her daily journal and friends and family to track when she got worse. Once she taught herself how to notice when she was having a manic or depressive episode she could take steps to remedy it such as relaxing or forcing herself to slow down, or getting out and doing something fun. Sunlight and being involved in activities that made sure she didn't hole up and feel depressed worked well. So did a nice bath or something she had to take her time on (she used knitting). |

If I am feeling depressed I will go for a long walk, it always seems to help. If the depression severe what about talking to a therapist. |
