Subject: Breast Milk For Eye Infections?

This is a little strange, to me at least. A relative has a nursing infant, who has conjunctivitis. It was recommended that they try breast milk in the eye as it is supposedly antibacterial.

Have you heard of this, could it work or could it hurt the kid?

Yes I've heard of it. No it won't hurt the kid, in fact it shouldn't sting at all. I'd just keep an eye on it to make sure that the infection doesn't get worse, and yes it is possible that it might help.

Its rather an odd thought I think-I wouldn't like someone squirting breast milk into my eyes! But if its a little baby then I can see the desire to avoid medicines by trying this instead. Especially if it works.

I guess that is a point-its better than the alternatives. I've just not heard of it before and thought it might be a little too out there-and a little too like risking the child's eyes to the infection.

I've never heard of this. Tell your friend to use a wash of weak tea. Just everyday tea like Salada or Lipton, but don't steep more than a couple minutes. Let cool to just warm and use that to wash the eyes (she should do both as it's easily spread from one to the other). Do this 6-10 times per day and it will take care of the infection. An eye doctor told me this when mine were little and it always worked. Tea is naturally anti-bacterial and it doesn't sting the eye like some of the medications do.

I would worry about getting a bit of the tea leaf in your baby's eye. Tea used to be really recommended till a few people had problems with flakes in it.

I googled the milk and found a bunch of results;

So can breast milk help other things that this and the normal feeding of a child? Its surprising what the natural body can do, I am finding more shocking things each day it seems.

I have heard that I think it was spider bites this can be used for? It might be something else but I could swear thats what a friend was telling me the other day.

You have got to be kidding! I've never heard of this before and I would be hesitant to even try it. Feeding the child breast milk is beneficial but to put it in the wee one's eye!

I've heard everything now!

Ewwwww! I don't think I would want anyone to squirt breast milk in my eye. I think I'll stick with the doctor's remedies on this one. Antibiotics may not be popular but at least I know they didn't come out of someone's body.

There are all sort of old wive's tales that have something to them. I haven't heard of this one before but I have heard of some just as strange.

What do you think?
