Subject: | Black Cohosh? | |
I know this is a popular herbal remedy for menopausal symptoms, especially hot flashes, but I know that I read some warnings about it somewhere. My friend has started using it along with soy to relieve her hot flashes and I want to be sure she will be safe. Has anyone heard any warnings about using this herbal remedy? |

I've heard that there is an increased risk for breast cancer as well as there have been documented cases of liver toxicity. I really think those cases are when people overdo it with herbal remedies but it may be something worth looking into further. |

Black Cohosh and soy both contain phytoestrogens, which is why they relieve menopausal symptoms. But they are not completely safe. The amount you have to take to relieve symptoms is an unnatural consumption level and has been linked to breast, cervical, and uterine cancers as well as endocrine disruption. |

I think that is great that you want to make sure your friend is safe in what she takes. Unfortunately these may be very beneficial for some symptoms but all in all I think there are far safer things she could try. |
