Subject: | acupuncture scam | |
Does anyone else think that accupuncture is a scam? I did not before treatment, but have changed completely in opinion after one session. Thoughts? |

Acupuncture has always been rather controversial, some swearing by it and others saying it is un-effective. Researchers using the protocols of evidence-based medicine have found good evidence that acupuncture is decent at preventing nausea. However there is conflicting evidence that it can be used for treatment of chronic lower back pain, and moderate evidence of the efficacy for neck pain and headache. For most other conditions research points to a lack of efficacy (e.g. help in quitting smoking, treatment for shoulder pain) or have concluded that there is insufficient evidence to determine whether the acupuncture is truly beneficial. |

Well, recently a group of Swedish researchers have come to the conclusion that acupuncture and exercise can help relieve pelvic pain during pregnancy. The researchers from the Health of Women and Children in Gothenburg, Sweden said: "The findings are of particular importance because no previous study has shown such marked treatment effects among pregnant women with well defined pelvic girdle pain," which was published online by the British Medical Journal. |

Yes I defnately believe it does work. It helped me through my last pregnancy and I have been recommending to everyone since. I had accupuncture once a week for a few months to help with my horrible migraines and they completely stopped :) I also used it for on my back to relieve pain which it worked as well. |

I think it probably works, but not based on the acupuncture. I think it works because of "mind over matter". The placebo effect. |

I think it works! Years ago, I had a friend who's dog had a bad leg from a car accident. She loved the dog so and hated to see it limping with pain. She took it to an acupuncturist, the dog had a few sessions, and stopped limping! It couldn't have been just mind over matter, since I doubt the dog knew what was happening. Maybe you need another acupuncturist and try it again? |

I think that is like saying that the concept of antibiotics is stupid because you weren't completely cured by the first pill you took. You could have a crappy acupuncturist. I am sure they exist just as much as other kinds of bad doctors. Or that the treatments take more than just once to work -- like physical therapy. I had a physical therapy treatment that was described in a way that sounded like nonsense that was powerfully effective. But the first time through did not fix what was out of kilter. |
