Treating Older People Like Children

Many people think that the older you get the more child like you get. That isn't true. Most older people have a great mind, are very active, and have a lot of stories that they can tell the younger generation.

There is no reason to treat older people like children telling them what to eat and what to wear and when to go to the bathroom. If we don't want to be treated like children then it's safe to assume that our parents and grandparents don't want to be treated like kids.

Of course if there is some kind of disease involved then you have to do what you can for that person but otherwise treat the aging person with respect and let them make their own decisions.

I think the other side of the coin is not particularly that old people are treated like children but that the only other groups who need such direction are children and those with mental issues. So perhaps we are treating our children like our old people and not the other way around? So long as you don't baby talk, dumb it down or treat them in a purposely demeaning way there is no reason why you should not create structure in an elderly person's life if they cannot do so themselves. Often they forget to eat, take meds, or do other chores if structure is not provided. This is why assisted living communities are so full.

I do agree with this. I think no matter what you should not treat your elderly family members like children. Treat them with respect.
I know it might be hard if they aren't physically or mentally able to do things that they have always done- but its the way it should be.

Older people should command more respects from people around them. After all, they went through what we are going through right now. It never harm to listen to their advices and experiences.
