Arthritis and the elderly

My mom told me today that my Grams arthritis is getting pretty bad that it is interfering with her bowels. Causing her to have a really hard time going to the bathroom.
She is 87.
Has anyone ever heard of this?
Can this cause her bowels to stop working all together and then what would happen?

I have heard that people with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) sometimes develops arthritis, but I haven't heard that arthritis will make going to the bathroom difficult.
I actually can't understand what about the arthritis is affecting her digestive system. All I can think of is that her joints are so painful that she can't sit and do her business.
I really haven't heard anything about arthritis making the bowels fail.

Arthritis is a disease of the joints, not the digestive system so I too really don't see how this is affecting her bathroom habits. Are you sure that it is the arthritis that is causing it?

This is very curious to me and I would like to find out more about it. I don't see how any bones/joints with arthritis would come into play or affect someones bowels. If you get more information I am definitely interested in hearing more.

This is what her doctor said- I know arthritis isn't associated with your bowels- but why would he say that?
I'm going to ask my mom tonight when I see her- and explain why I think it makes no sense.
