Appetite Stimulant For Older People?

I know of several cases of people in or around their 80s that are experiencing loss of appetite.

I suppose this comes with the age to a certain extent, but does anyone know of a way for these older people to have their appetites stimulated?

I know of nothing like that unfortunately. The older we get the fewer calories we need and so the appetite decreases accordingly.

Given that older people do have a reduced need for calories, I would think that such a thing could be dangerous. This could potentially lead to them becoming overweight from having an intake higher than what they use up.

Well,
Wine, certain beers, and some medications will stimulate appetite in most people.

I think that people in their 80's are experiencing loss of appetite as an artifact of aging, and the decreased ability to metabolize a lot of substances that comes with it.

The elderly usually don't eat more. Moreover, they don't need that many calories. If the person can't eat anything at all, I guess the doctor can prescribe something that will stimulate appetite. Simultaneously, light exercises and an active social life does keep an elderly person happy and gives him or her a better appetite for food too.

I realize that people require less calories in later years, but the cases I was referring to involved weight loss that was beginning to be a concern.

Thanks for the thoughts.

Hello Ricardo,

I got here via The Health Care Blog. I saw you quest to help the elderly and signed up right away. Had to answer you.

When my Mother was dying from Colon Cancer and lost her appetite, the DR. prescribed her a drug called Marinol. It is a deritive of Marijuana. It does not contain the THC or whatever it is that causes the "hugh" feeling. It's the part that gives birth to the "munchies".

I have always dearly loved and respected the elderly and I hope this will help yo to help someone who needs there appetite increased.

My Mom was very depressed and bitter about getting cancer because she had always taken such good care of herself. The Marinol did not help her, but I think the depression is why.
