Medi-Share: A Viable Alternative to Opt-Out of Obamacare

Obamacare has dominated the media as a complete debacle. With millions of Americans suffering from dropped insurance plans and struggling to find a solution in compliance with the Affordable Care Act’s deadlines and to provide for their medical needs, the whole situation is daunting and disheartening. Medi-Share is a viable and affordable solution to opt out of Obamacare for those who profess and live a faith with Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. For those interested, the program is well worth serious consideration.

A Truly Unique System

Those interested in Medi-Share first need to be aware of one key fact: Participation in the program is only an option for those living a Christian faith. The reason is simply that qualifying is based upon lifestyle choices in line with principles of that faith as they can and do relate to medical and health decisions. The intention is not exclusivity. Odds are someone who is not of the Christian faith would not be interested in how the program works.

Medi-Share is not the same as traditional insurance, in fact it’s not insurance at all. Members pay a monthly share. The whole idea is grounded in the Biblical teaching that the Church, being the Body of Christ, cares for the needs of other members. Every “share” is used to pay for medical expenses other members are faced with.

A Word on Routine Care

Routine care may be eligible for a discount through the program, but not full coverage. Preventative care is handled similarly. The reason is rooted in the belief that as good stewards of God’s provisions in life, routine care is expected and thus a known need to be prepared for, not an entitlement. Sharing is intended more for unforeseen emergencies that represent true financial duress.

The Benefits

When a truly unexpected medical need arises, Medi-share’s members take care of it. Real people contribute toward each other’s needs. Aside from the fulfillment of knowing money is going toward actual needs, monthly shares are cheaper than the majority of insurance options available. According an article featured on “The Christian Post,” the average contribution per family is below $300.00 every month, (“Christian Health Sharing Programs Exempt From ‘Obamacare’ See Rapid Growth“).

  • There is true security in the program’s results. Even with supposedly good insurance, a medical emergency can still cost a literal fortune. The system of sharing medical burdens eliminates that horrific possibility
  • Maternity is eligible for sharing, as is adoption for up two per household.

The Program is Stable

Since medical sharing is qualified as congress as being exempt from the insurance mandates in the Affordable Care Act, there is no risk of the program changing or falling flat.

If you happen to be a Christian looking for a viable alternative to opt out of the Affordable Care Act this very well could be your answer. The program offers an opportunity to actually make a meaningful difference in meeting real needs of other people who share a faith in Christ. Ultimately that is the best aspect of being a member of the program. How Does Medi-Share Work?
Medi-Share is one of the largest healthcare sharing programs in the United States that has seen steady, rapid growth since 2010, when the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, was passed by Congress. Since the act was passed, the government has begun implementing the program by stages.

Many Christians are dissatisfied with some of the requirements and provisions in the Affordable Care Act, which include access to contraception and abortion, and the expense of purchasing the required health insurance. People who participate in Medi-Share pay significantly lower amounts for their care and can feel peace of mind in knowing that their money is not supporting activities that conflict with their faith.

Medi-Share has grown by about 20 percent each year since the Affordable Care Act was passed and about 62,000 members are currently part of the program. Families of four typically pay less than $300 per month, a significant difference from traditional insurance plans.

How Does Medi-Share Work?

Many people are unfamiliar with the concept of a healthcare sharing program and are left wondering, “How does Medi-Share work?” Money that is paid into Medi-Share is disbursed directly from members to other members who need it for their medical care. Becoming a member of Medi-Share means that you are connecting with thousands of other believers, receiving support from them when you need care and offering it back when they need it.

Medi-Share was given an exemption from the Affordable Care Act, which would have required people to purchase health insurance coverage, even people who were members of a healthcare sharing program like Medi-Share. People who are members of Medi-Share are not required to buy health insurance because of this exemption.

Medi-Share is different from a health insurance coverage plan. Members of Medi-Share decide as a group what medical issues will be covered under the program. Not all medical conditions are covered. However, since the program’s founding nearly 20 years ago, no one with an eligible health condition has been denied coverage.

Does Medi-Share Cover Prescriptions?

There are deductibles for emergencies and other medical problems, and preventative care, well-visits and other routine care are not shareable under the program, with the exception of well-baby visits. However, Medi-Share is affiliated with many physicians’ offices, and members are eligible for discounts for certain types of visits. The low cost of the program and discounts make it easy to plan and budget for routine care, and other members share the burden of unexpected injuries and illnesses.

People who want to join Medi-Share must apply and sign a pledge that they will live a clean, biblical life, which means that they will abstain from tobacco, alcohol, drugs and other activities forbidden in the Bible. By living a biblical life, members will have happier, healthier families. Members support each other through times of trouble and help carry their fellow believers’ burdens. This builds a strong community of believers in which every person is uplifted by their brothers and sisters in Christ.

Does Medi-Share Cover Prescriptions?

The most common question about the program is, “Does Medi-Share cover prescriptions?” Medications that are prescribed to treat a condition that is eligible for sharing are covered for six months under the program. Medications for pre-existing conditions are not covered, but Medi-Share offers members resources on finding discounts for prescription drugs.

The program is affiliated with NeedyMeds, an organization that offers a medication prescription card that can give cardholders discounts of up to 75 percent on their medications. This discount, along with the inexpensive health plan that members receive by choosing Medi-Share as opposed to a traditional health insurance plan, still results in lower healthcare costs. Medi-Share members can also use eDrugSearch.com, a free cost-comparison engine that helps consumers save 50-80% off all their prescription medication costs.

Does Medi-Share Cover Pregnancy?

Pregnancy is an important, joyful part of a family’s life, but many married couples delay or forgo having children or expanding their families because they do not know how they will pay for the medical costs of pregnancy. Young couples or people who want to grow their families wonder, “Does Medi-Share cover pregnancy?”

  • Members at certain membership levels can pay for their pregnancy-related expenses through Medi-Share as long as they have been members since conception.
  • Mothers who are eligible for coverage for their pregnancies can receive coverage for pregnancy-related complications and other issues.
  • Newborns whose mothers are members at the time of their birth can be added to the family’s plan. Well baby visits are shared under the plan for up to $775 per year. These visits include checkups, vaccinations and other doctor visits for the first two years of the baby’s life to promote happy, healthy babies.

How to Get Christian Health Insurance Coverage

Acts 4:34 states, “For there was not a needy person among them, for all who were owners of land or houses would sell them and bring the proceeds of the sales.” [1] This was an extraordinary, spontaneous out-pouring of love on the part of the new believers in the early church. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to see that happen today?

Christians are concerned about healthcare costs and the implications of the Affordable Health Care Act passed by the Obama administration. Many have wondered how to get Christian health insurance coverage. Medi-share is a company that provides health and disability coverage that is based on biblical principles.

How to Get Christian Health Insurance Coverage

Medi-share is a cost sharing program, which is unlike traditional insurance products. In fact, it is not health insurance and is not required to be licensed or regulated by any insurance company.

How Does Medi-share Work?

Each member contributes a monthly share. This amount varies by the number of people in the household and the age of the oldest member. The money is kept in an account with America’s Christian Credit Union. When a member has an eligible expense, the money is then pooled from this account to cover it.

Disability Coverage

Medi-share also offers a disability program called Manna. It works on the same principle as the health cost sharing program but provides twelve months of income replacement. Manna will cover up to 80 percent of income for an eligible disability claim.

How to Get Christian Health Insurance Coverage for Seniors

Senior Assist is cost sharing for people over the age of 65. This program covers expenses not covered by Medicare Parts A and B, such as hospitalization, skilled nursing, co-payments and deductibles. The cost is very competitive compared to other Medicare supplement programs and may cover eligible pre-existing conditions.

Cost Sharing Programs for Groups

Church and Christian organizations often struggle to find affordable healthcare coverage for their employees. Medi-share provides cost sharing programs that will not strain the budget of your organization. The program is similar to that of individual plans; however, members receive a discount on the membership fee. Monthly shares and eligible expenses are handled through a group administrator.

Health and Wellness Program

Medi-share offers a unique program that focuses on physical and spiritual well-being. Members are encouraged to pray and support each other. The Restore program offers personalized wellness coaching to help members achieve personal health goals. Members learn about healthy eating, exercise and weight loss through a coach who listens and prays for them.

Medi-share and the Affordable Health Care Act

The Affordable Health Care Act includes a mandate that requires most Americans to purchase health insurance by 2014 or pay a penalty. By enrolling in Medi-share, members are exempt from having to purchase government insurance. This is not only cost effective, but it also ensures that Christians will not be forced to provide financial support for practices that are not compatible with their values.

What is Christian Care Ministry?

Christian Care Ministry is a non-profit organization which oversees Medi-share and facilitates the cost sharing program. Christian Care does not pay expenses directly to health care providers; they simply oversee the processing of eligible expenses. Providers submit their bills directly to Christian Care to receive payment through cost sharing.

As Americans debate President Obama’s health care plan, many are seeking a Christian health insurance alternative. Medi-Share is an option that some are using and others are considering. The self-described “Christian care medical sharing” program promises all the benefits health insurance without the high monthly premiums.

How Medi-Share Differs from Health Insurance

Medi-Share is a member-based health care program where Christians help each other. It is not health insurance, but it serves the same purpose. Health insurance involves a contractual agreement to pay someone’s medical bills. Medi-Share is an organized health care sharing ministry where members voluntarily share medical costs.

The Biblical Principles of Medi-Share

Medi-Share was founded on biblical principles. Members follow the mandates found in Galatians, Ephesians and other books in the Bible. Galatians 6:2 says that Christians are to “carry each others burdens” to fulfill the law of Christ.

Ephesians 4:28 instructs Christians to share with people in need.  ”He who has been stealing must steal no longer,” the verse says, “but work, doing something useful with his own hands, that he may have something to share with those in need.”

How Does the Medi-Share Program Work?

Medi-Share is more than health care; it is a community of people who pray for each other, support each other and share each other’s medical costs. Members pay a monthly share into an account at Christian Credit Union. The joint funds pay the medical bills for that month.

Each month, Medi-Share tallies the medical claims for each plan and divides it by the number of members signed up for the plan. After the administrative and overhead expenses are paid, the remaining funds pay the claims.

Medi-Share has many flexible plans and program levels. Members have the option of choosing their own doctors and hospitals. However, those who choose networked professionals receive additional discounts.

Medi-Share members enjoy significant cost savings over traditional health insurance. According to the program website, families average $282 a month. Medi-Share enables them to save up to $2,000 a year on insurance premiums.

Government Insurance Mandate Exemptions

Medi-Share members also enjoy another benefit: exemption from the penalties that Americans must pay if they fail to buy insurance by 2014. Although the President signed legislation that requires the purchase of government-regulated health insurance, the law gives health care sharing ministries an exemption. As medical cost rise in this struggling economy, Medi-Share allows Christians to afford health care as they commit to biblical values.

Medi-Share Eligibility Requirements

While Medi-Share is a viable Christian health insurance alternative, applicants must meet certain requirements for membership. Not everyone is accepted into the program.

To qualify, applicants must agree to the Medi-Share statement of faith, and their Christian testimonies must be verifiable. They must attend a church or fellowship of believers and actively support that ministry. To maintain membership, Christians must live a biblical lifestyle that includes no tobacco or drug use as well as sexual abstinence before marriage.

Since members vote annually on what costs to share, the program may not cover all medical bills. It does not cover pre-existing health conditions. However, for healthy Christians who adhere to a biblical lifestyle, Medi-Share may be the health care alternative they are seeking.
