Fard Johnmar of Envision Solutions has produced a new report designed to facilitate communication between health organizations and social networkers. We were fortunate to be among the Web sites profiled in the study and got a sneak peek at it last week. As always with Fard’s work, the report is thoughtful and well-documented.

In introducing the report, Fard [pictured] is also hosting a Webinar on January 29 at noon Central.

I came across this excellent post on Thomas Hawk’s blog. If you’re pinching pennies these days, you must read it.

Here are a few of Tom’s 50 tips:

  • Unplug appliances part of the time when not in use. Also unscrew lightbulbs in some places instead of just turning the light off. This especially will help with young children who are not always so good at turning lights off when they are done.
  • Try to find free things to do. Watch a kids baseball game (this also reduces stress, watching them play). Go hear a free lecture at a bookstore by an author. Feed the ducks with old bread at the lake. Have a picnic. Play chess or other board games that you pick up for cheap at a local garage sale. Go to a gallery opening for an artist (oftentimes there is free wine and food there too).
  • Track every expense for a month. Write down or save receipts for literally everything, even the $2 frozen yogurt that you bought last Tuesday. Sit down and review all of these expenses at the end of the month and try to figure out what you can cut out.
  • Always ask for generic prescription drugs instead of the name brand when you fill your prescription.
  • Compare prices online. Is there something that you found that you really want to buy? Check online first to see if you can buy it cheaper (remember to factor in shipping and tax costs).

We’ve written a lot here about the dangers of taking drugs without a prescription, of doctor shopping, of accidental overdoses and unanticipated drug interactions, and of forgoing needed medications to save money. But one thing we haven’t written about is medication non-adherence — the problem of people simply forgetting to take their meds.

It’s a more widespread, and serious, issue than you might have imagined. According to Intelecare, one out of every two patients fails to follow physician instructions. When patients are asked why, 84 percent cite forgetfulness as the main reason for their non-adherence.

And check out these numbers:

  • 1 out of 8 heart attack patients stops taking life-saving drugs after just 1 month
  • 31 percent of all prescriptions are not filled the first time
  • 15 percent of all hospital visits ($47 billion/annually) are due to medication non-adherence
  • 125,000 deaths annually are the result of non-adherence
  • Up to 60 percent of patients cannot correctly report what their physicians expected of them 10 to 80 minutes after they were provided with the information
  • Non-adherence costs the healthcare system over $300 billion annually

Intelecare offers a personal reminder service that helps ensure healthcare consumers take their medications as prescribed. The service has more than three million subscribers.

If you have problems remembering to take your meds, or you’re a caregiver of someone who forgets to take their meds, Intelecare may be the solution for you. You can learn more here.
