Big Pharma paying off generic drug manufacturers to avoid competition

A report by the Federal Trade Commission has found that Big Pharma is paying off generic drug manufacturers in order to sell brand-name products for longer periods without competition.
Apparently, the generic drug manufacturers can make more money from witholding their drugs from the market than from selling them.

More companies to produce generic Zocor

Although the FDA approved the production of a generic version of Zocor in June 2006 by both Teva Pharmaceutical and Ranbaxy Laboratories, prices for the drug have dropped less than 10 percent since then. The recent approval of six more companies to sell generic Zocor should change that.

If Big Pharma isn’t picking your pocket, the big drugstore chains are

Rite Aid Corp. — the third-biggest drugstore chain, which recently agreed to buy the Eckerd and Brooks chains as well — has seen its profits rise of late after its introduction of generic versions of drugs such as Zoloft.
Why? Because generic medications carry a higher profit margin for the big chains than brand-name drugs.
