A Kaiser Family Foundation survey found that 18% of seniors either skipped doses of medicines or did not fill prescriptions at all due to cost. And these were respondents with drug coverage! Of those without insurance coverage, 37% did not buy or take medication as prescribed, again due to cost.

Expensive, patented extended release drugs ("suffix drugs") are not beneficial if patients cannot afford to buy them. It is for these patients (who are disciplined enough to take medications more than once a day) that I recommend avoiding patented suffix drugs as a way to afford essential treatments.

In cases where only an extended release product would be appropriate, I offer many other cost-saving methods that can make the treatment affordable.
