Positive Aspects of Fentanyl transdermal system:  It comes on a patch you apply to your skin and lasts for three days

Negative Aspects of Fentanyl transdermal system:  It is dangerous to have around the house and can't be touched by anyone else

Reason for taking Fentanyl transdermal system:  Severe arthritis pain

Additional Comments:  You need to be very careful when applying the patch and when throwing it away after use. If it is touched, the drug can be absorbed via the skin and so you can't leave it around the house. It must be flushed away after use. It also causes constipation.

Positive Aspects of Fentanyl transdermal system:  Very strong painkiller!

Negative Aspects of Fentanyl transdermal system:  Made me violently ill

Reason for taking Fentanyl transdermal system:  Chronic back problems

Additional Comments:  Fentanyl did work, but the problem is that it hit me all at once. It took twelve hours before it worked, and when it did...I was extremely ill, for hours. I had to sleep for an entire day as well. My doctor said he thinks I have an unusual reaction to it, and obviously I've gone back to my old meds. I have a friend who also has back problems who used Fentanyl with great success, however.

Positive Aspects of Fentanyl transdermal system:  Continuous pain control - no need to remember to take a pill

Negative Aspects of Fentanyl transdermal system:  Can be dangerous in the wrong hands

Reason for taking Fentanyl transdermal system:  Chronic facial pain and migraine control

Additional Comments:  There has been a lot of negative press about the fentanyl patch. Sandoz "Duragesic" has been recalled, but I use the Mylan system. I have never had a problem because I use the patch exactly as directed. That is the key to safety. As usual, ambulance-chasing lawyers are jumping on the patch, giving it a lot of negative and often inaccurate press. The patch allows me to live my life free of debalitating pain.
